Wetting Transitions

Short Description

We have proposed an alternative method to control and reversibly switch the mobility of liquid droplets onto porous surfaces. The backpressure of the porous medium is adjusted to favor the antiwetting (or wetting) pressures and therefore render the droplet mobile (or sticky). This principle for switching the mobility of a droplet can be applied in various hydrophobic porous media with different size characteristics, in media after ageing, or even if the surface roughness increases to high values, with no prerequisites for hierarchical or superhydrophobic initial state. It can also be applied underwater, or can be integrated in microfluidic devices.

Fluidic Valving

Short Description

We propose the application of ultra-low backpressure on porous media, as means for valving in microfluidics. The aim is to fabricate and characterize a component for droplet flow manipulation. This project has gained financial support from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, through the "Scientific Projects 2015" program.

Active control of droplet mobility after impingement on porous surfaces

Short Description

Droplet impingement onto surfaces plays a crucial role in a variety of processes, including fog harvesting, anti-icing, dropwise condensation and spray coating. We have presented a generic method to reversibly switch the mobility of a droplet after impingement onto a hydrophobic porous surface, from a sticky to a slippery state and back.
