Valving for fluidics

Short Description

We have  developed a tool (uVALVIT) for actuation and valving in fluidics utilizing the manipulation scheme for liquid droplet/plug mobility on hydrophobic porous surfaces, by means of backpressure. With uVALVIT, the gas pockets characteristics at the liquid–solid interface are controlled, which in turn play a crucial role at the mechanics of the plug adhesion. The adequate backpressure is ultra-low and is directly related to the ultra low energy demands of the entire tool.

With uVALVIT the use of electromagnetic energy, foreign particles, oily phases, or moving elements is avoided. The liquid phase remains unaffected both chemically and thermally. uVALVIT is also amenable to integration in miniaturized, low power, portable devices such as microfuidics, and lab-on-chip devices, as well as in large scale applications.
